I wrote this press release as the director of communications at BISC South Loop. It announces a school visit by Jim Plunkett-Cole, a UK man who was pursing an epic running challenge like Forrest Gump.

I collaborated with my counterpart at the school’s sister campus, BISC Lincoln Park, on the writing, editing and dissemination.

BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF CHICAGO HOSTS RUNNER PURSUING “FORREST GUMP” STYLE EPIC CHALLENGE

JANUARY 30, 2017 – The British International School of Chicago (BISC) has announced today it will host Jim Plunkett-Cole, a runner from the UK who has embarked on an incredible adventure that will see him emulating the epic run of fictional character Forrest Gump.

Jim started his journey on October 1 this year, with the goal of running 20,000 miles throughout America over three years. Jim will engage with thousands of children in schools along the route, highlighting the importance of a healthy lifestyle and promoting the benefits of daily exercise and good nutrition in the fight against childhood obesity.

Visiting major cities across the USA, Jim will lead an educational assembly and participate in a series of “Talk and Runs” with students ages 5 to 12. Jim will host events at both BISC schools – BISC South Loop and BISC Lincoln Park – on February 2 and February 3, respectively.

Another key driver for Jim is to motivate and inspire youth to overcome personal challenges. As an adult with Asperger Syndrome, Jim is passionate about raising awareness that conditions on the autism spectrum do not need to be viewed negatively.

Michael Horton, Founding Headmaster of BISC South Loop, said, “This is an unprecedented opportunity for our students and parents to meet an ambitious man on a tremendous personal journey. Jim embodies our approach to learning, which is rooted in our belief that through creativity and challenge there is no limit to what children can achieve.”

Mel Curtis, Principal of BISC Lincoln Park, added, “Jim’s story offers our students a chance to learn why staying fit and active is important to their overall well-being. We’re looking forward to his visit and being part of his epic Talk and Run experience.”
